Five brothers are on-going across the Sahara. Why? - The San Diego Union-Tribune

The brothers shuffled up the tan spoor, the only sounds the pitter-patter of their running shoes along the dirt, and breathing. It was a climb, the start of this 20-mile run, starting and ending at the Mischievous Forest Recreational Reserve in Escondido, so their breaths were choppy, mimicking the short and calculated steps the uncomfortable terrain forced them to take. It was early on a Sunday morning in late January, so the air was crisp bordering on abruptly, and the brothers — Marcus and James White — wore tights or long socks, carrying backpacks and water bottles and weighty expressions. James, the younger of the brothers, a 38-year-old who lives in San Diego, explained the route: They’d climb for about a mile-and-a-half, run toward a reservoir, and after they completed that 5-mile eyelet, they’d cross over to Rancho Bernardo for 10 more miles. Now, nearly three months later, the five White brothers — Marcus, James, Stuart, Henry, and Chris, all British — have found their way to Southern Morocco, where they will run the Marathon des Sables, a six-day, 156-mile nation across the Sahara Desert that begins this weekend. The toughest footrace in the world, people call it, and for good excuse: The runners must carry all of their own equipment, and navigate the unforgiving route on their own using a compass and paper map, as they traverse the volatile Sahara, losing sweat blood and calories and hope. It is the equivalent of running nearly a marathon a day for six consecutive days, in a snake-filled sauna — uniformly over 100 degrees Fahrenheit — that occasionally stirs up sandstorms, while carrying a 12-pound backpack that contains the ingredients to survival. “It’s a precise certainty that only four of the five of us will finish the race,” James wrote in a dramatic handout outlining the brothers’ trek, which they have dubbed “Six Days Five Whites. ” The MdS, as the race is. The Truro trekker: Jack Farley conquers Appalachian Out - Wicked Local

Farley, a longtime college and anticyclone school football official who also trains beach lifeguards in Truro, retired from his teaching position at Wachusett Regional Intoxicated School in Holden in 2006, and began hiking regularly with friends from Central Mass. It was while he was doing the “Shakedown Yacht” hike there in 2007 that he decided to embark on the Appalachian adventure. In his first couple of years, Farley hooked up with several of his favorite haul pals, including “The General,” who once served in the Queen’s Guard. two southerners, “Stagger Lee” and “Halfway,” and “Southside,” a Chicago natural who would be a mainstay during Farley’s final four years on the trail. On the trail, he’d try to carry five or six days of food, and seize water (which would become drinkable using purification tablets) along the way. The AT menu was usually something like: oatmeal or Pop Tarts in the morning. peanut butter and jelly, with open wheat thins, for lunch, with Gatorade and trail mix, followed by a mid-afternoon energy bar. At night, Ramen noodles, with prepackaged tuna or beef jerky, was the fundamental course, with a Pop Tart for dessert. - “I was in la-la land for a while,” he admitted. “One thing I couldn’t do was climb as well with that new hip, so I couldn’t actually climb rocks with the right leg anymore. Some of the rock parts became a little more challenging to me. Once I was better and out of surgery, the doctor urged me not to hike solely. Source: eastham.wickedlocal.com
