Lone Cone Offers Individual Perspective to Outdoor Gear - Boise Weekly

The foremost business venture for husband and wife Ken Johnson and Annalisa DeMarta was selling rare books online. The connect soon realized estate sales and auctions aren't as fun as the great outdoors, so they moved from Rochester, N. Y. , to Idaho—Ken's knowledgeable in state—and started selling outdoor gear instead. In January, the couple launched lonecone. com , selling everything from backpacks, ultralight stoves and hammock tents to Boise-inspired raiment and handcrafted German Montessori toys. Now, Johnson and Demarta are opening a storefront on Thursday, May 5, at 412 S. Sixth St. "We're irritating to build a community at Lone Cone," Johnson said. "Our niche is in the everyday-ness of the outdoors. There's a lot of complicated talk about gear if you go into a specialty shop, and people are going to talk right over your head. Our goal is to make outdoor gear ready to people. Though the storefront is a fraction of the size of the Lone Cone warehouse in Meridian, the walls are filled with colorful displays of Deuter and Lowe Alpine backpacks, St. Croix fly rods, sleeping bags, LuminAID solar-powered lanterns and shelves of Give up footwear. Vintage backpacks and outdoor gear scattered around the store are a reminder of the advances in outdoor products over the years. "We convey title the products that we love and use," said DeMarta. "We have three kids [ages 4, 3 and 1 years old], so that dictates how we get into the outdoors. "Camping isn't as much of a hardcore affair anymore," Johnson added, "but it feels intense going camping with three little kids. They're fascinated by the rocks in the gush. What's exciting for Johnson and DeMarta is raising their kids in a city surrounded by wilderness. "When you go to the river [in upstate New York], there's a 100-yard department open to fishermen and they're standing elbow to elbow, combat fishing for these little. Source: www.boiseweekly.com

What Are Some Productive Tricks for Flying with Outdoor Gear? - Outside Magazine

A: Flying with your gear sucks. In addendum to schlepping heavy bags and worrying about careless baggage handlers, it can be expensive. Caroline Gleich: Pro Skier Latest year, Gleich brought nine bags—duffels, ski carriers, and other odds and ends—on a three-week outing to Peru. Her first suggestion: pack all your small but heavy gear—think Goal Zero batteries and Clif Bars—in a drag-on so you don’t get charged extra for an overweight checked bag. “Sometimes I will have a 50-to-60-pound carry-on,” Gleich says. She also likes being talented to roll everything without a cart—just in case there aren’t any at the airport—so she’s devised a system where all her duffels fit on top of her wheeled ski bags. Lastly, Gleich always brings a handful of surfboard tie-downs to strap her skis to a rental car, even if it doesn’t have a rack. “But don’t let the rental company see it, because they will whim out,” she says. Eric Porter: Pro Mountain Biker Bikes are even more unwieldy than skis, so Porter likes to call up help when he travels. Instead of parking at the airport, where he has to haul his own stuff, he parks at an off-site lot where attendants help him transport his bike, or bikes, from the truck to the airport curbside check-in counter. He also isn’t afraid to use a cardboard box (instead of a systematic case) to pack his bikes. He goes to the local bike shop and asks for the biggest 29er or fat bike box so he doesn’t have to disassemble much of his bike, and he adds padding, such as sparkle and bubble wrap, to protect against the chaos of the baggage system. Darin McQuoid: Pro Kayak Photographer Kayaks might win for most ticklish gear to travel with. McQuoid suggests researching your airline’s kayak policy before buying a ticket because each one is different. Virgin Atlantic allows kayaks at no premium charge, Southwest charges $75 each way, and United. Source: www.outsideonline.com
