Is The Trans-Alaska Hang back America's Next Great Long Trail? - Backpacker Magazine

Alaska’s wildlands are illustrious for their lack of official paths — even national parks like Denali and Wrangell-St. The just-announced Trans-Alaska Lag behind would offer ambitious hikers a chance to walk 800 miles across the state from the Pacific coast township of Valdez to Prudhoe Bay on the Arctic Sea. The route would cross the massive Chugach, Alaska, and Brooks Ranges, and suggest hikers hardy enough to brave it heroic doses of giant glaciers, empty taiga, and tundra teeming with wildlife along the way. That such an vigorous idea is remotely possible largely rests on the fact that it (mostly) already exists. The trail would follow an existing gravel advantage pad for the Trans-Alaska Pipeline (TAPS). Pipeline operator Alyeska currently uses it to service the organize. the company allows recreational access on a case-by-case basis. Alaska State Representative Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins (D-Sitka) in front came up with the idea of opening up the trail to the public after a college road trip on the Richardson Highway, which along with the Dalton Highway parallels the main for most of its length but remains between one and 15 miles away. “I was running along this spectacular section, and I just filed it away, but the plumb next year I ended up in the legislature and I started thinking about how to explore the epic potential of this trail,” he says. “Alaska is at a great discussion point. There are budget deficits, there’s the uncertain future of our economy, the decline of the oil and gas industry here, and we’re at a crossroads in more ways than one. This is one of the largest pieces of oil bustle infrastructure in the world, and at the same time, it counterintuitively might also be a world-class recreation gateway. The pipeline itself tunnels in France Maquis and out of sight for about half its length. For the other half, where Arctic permafrost prevents. Source: www.backpacker.com

How Joshua Tree's favoured Lost Horse Mine Trail helped a 'hike-hater' change her mind - Los Angeles Times

“For our 30th alloying anniversary in August 2014, I wanted to take a Mediterranean cruise to Italy,” she explained as we started off on the snow-spotted dawdle, a loop featuring the iconic Lost Horse Mine, a rich vein of gold and silver that was empty 80 years ago. “Chris said OK, but I knew he really wanted to go to Peru to hike the famous Inca Dwindle to Machu Picchu. “I thought, ‘No way. I hate hiking. ' And I can't handle elevation. The Inca Trail is 27 miles over three days, wonderful-steep, and tops out at 14,000 feet. Elevation isn't a major issue on the Lost Horse Mine Dim. 2-mile hike rises a moderately strenuous 1,215 feet to 5,278 feet at the survey. Keeping you company along the way: the strange, twisted, spiky-leafed, Dr. Seuss-ian yucca cacti known as Joshua trees, which stud the countryside and only grow in the Mojave Desert of southwest California, Nevada, Utah and Arizona at elevations from 2,000 to 6,000 feet. They were named so by Mormon pioneers because it reminded them of the biblical chassis Joshua, with their tree limbs outstretched in supplication, guiding the sojourners westward. “Although Chris never said anything, I felt I was letting him down on Machu Picchu,” she continued as we traveled token-clockwise on the trail loop, which makes a slight rise over the first easy, uneventful three miles, stately only by an odd, free-standing 10-foot tall stone chimney, apparently where a home used to be. “Growing up, Chris was a Boy Scout whose unscathed life was hiking and backpacking, but he had no one to do it with after the kids went off to college. That changed after she got a new perspective. Pausing on a rock pile that marks the loop's halfway signification and overlooks the Mojave Desert floor 2,000 feet below, she told me about her “wake-up call” — an out-of-the-down in the mouth request one day by a neighbor to join her for some exercise in Peter's Canyon, just around the.
