Leading EU migrant deportations from Greece to Turkey 'go smoothly', despite protests - euronews

The action played out at dawn on the island of Lesbos was orderly in contrast to those witnessed on Greek shores in recent months. Two Turkish-flagged traveller boats carrying more than 130 migrants were the first to set sail for Dikili in Turkey from the Greek port of Mytilene under a argumentative European Union scheme. A third boat carrying mainly Afghans later left the port of Chios. The aim according to the European Commission is to halt the mass exodus orchestrated by human traffickers which saw a million people pour across the Aegean Sea to Greece, ordinarily in dangerous conditions, over the past year. The returnees had earlier been taken from holding centres on the island. The EU’s upon force Frontex helped Greek police with the operation. “Today’s operation went very smoothly. It was altogether calm. Migrants went on to buses with their escorting officers. They came here, they collected their luggage and with their escorting officers, they boarded the ferries. A few dozen protesters by the quayside voiced their condemnation, bearing banners with slogans such as “Ferries for safe passage not deportation”, “Stop the deal” and “No sensitive being is illegal”. “Turkey is not a safe country for refugees,” read another placard, reflecting a major bother among protesters. Refugee agencies and human rights campaigners have denounced the accord. A few days ago the UN merciful rights agency the called for safeguards to be put into place before migrants began to be returned. In return for advantages – including more affluent, early visa-free travel and progress in its EU membership negotiations – Turkey will take back all migrants arriving illegally in Greece if they don’t interview for asylum or their claim is rejected. it’s all about money. I’m here with my heart, I care for people. Source: www.euronews.com

A mutiny for our times: Rojava, Northern Syria - Open Democracy

When the ‘Arab Vault’ spread to Syria in 2011, Bashar Al Assad withdrew most of his forces from the predominantly Kurdish areas of Northern Syria to collect his firepower on the rebel forces in the South. The political freedoms of the Kurds had been heavily restricted by Assad, expressions of Kurdish singularity were criminalised and their demographic density was diluted by Assad’s ‘Arabisation’ policy in which Arabs were resettled in Kurdish areas. The Kurds took upper hand of Assad’s distractedness. under the direction of PYD (Democratic Union Party) which was influenced by the ideology of ‘democratic confederalism’ propounded by Abdullah Öcalan, jailed number one of the PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) across the border in Turkey, the Syrian Kurds set up a secular and ethnically incorporating, genuinely bottom-up democratic system. It is valiantly defended by men and women soldiers (YPG/YPJ) against ISIS which is unsuccessfully attempting to wear down its Southern border. This is part one of the diary I kept on my recent visit to Rojava:. I am making preparations for usual to Rojava, the Kurdish enclave, in Northern Syria against a backdrop of anxious family and friends, mostly anxious about bombs and shrapnel, while some are caring that I haven’t informed the British foreign office and may be arrested as a potential terrorist. I am relying on my press greetings card and history of journalism in the UK for my ‘get out of jail’ card. Meanwhile I’m more worried about reported shortages of electricity and water. I am succeeding there to research my forthcoming book, Why Doesn’t Patriarchy Die. I have discovered that there is a revolution going on (in the middle of a war. ) which both ideologically and in actually puts women in the driving seat. I have to fly to Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan (Kurdish Regional Government) and then take a four hour motor to the border at Peshabur on a road that skirts Mosul,. Source: www.opendemocracy.net
