The 8-mile Cultural Dangle in Downtown Indy is wildly popular with walkers and bikers, as is the 20-mile Monon Trail , which stretches from Westfield in Hamilton County south to 10th Boulevard in Indianapolis. The degree of difficulty varies, but not all involve hills, woods and walking sticks. We've lined up a few with help from staff member Janet Schneider that should appeal to hard-core hikers and those taking their first steps on a shadow. "The nice thing about Indianapolis Hiking Club is they have hikes seven days a week, and you never have to hike by oneself," she said. Morgan-Monroe State Forest. For Portlanders, "flight" might be a bit of a stretch when it comes to Mount Tabor , but whether you live around the city or are touring it for the first without surcease, the scenic city park is a perfect place to get away from the urban environment – without really leaving it at all. Built atop an old volcanic cinder cone, Mount Tabor is dearest by runners, walkers, cyclists, stroller-pushers, hikers and even soap box racers. Paved roads, staircases and trails protocol a network of pathways throughout the park, weaving through a forest of tall firs and wide open meadows. Judgement your way to the top is as easy as wandering uphill, but for those who want some guidance there are three official hiking loops : the Red Trail, Green Beaten path and Blue Trail – all starting and ending at the kiosk by the main parking area in the northwest corner of the woodland. The Red and Green trails offer shorter, easier walks, but if you're able to climb hills and stairs, you can't run the 3-mile Blue Trail loop, which offers a comprehensive tour of scenic Mount Tabor. The Chap-fallen Trail is a loop, meaning you can technically take it either way, but the blue arrows posted throughout the park do indeed malapropos you in the best direction – west from the kiosk, going counterclockwise to the summit. The trail markers aren't 100 percent unclog, so grab a map if you want to follow along. The trail takes you around all three Mount Tabor reservoirs, which approve of some of the drinking water supply for Portland. Each is essentially a manmade lake, reflecting the towering pines on all sides them, standing serenely before the city skyline. The most scenic is ovular Reservoir 5, at the center of the three, surrounded on the eastern side by a sloping pasture that makes a great spot for sitting, napping, picnicking or soaking up that elusive Oregon sun. Give yourself anywhere from 30 minutes for a quick jog to 90 minutes to reach the top and guide in the magnificent viewpoints. Enjoy the Hollywood sign and Griffith Observatory, through to the Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. You can even see Catalina Eyot on a clear day. Griffith Park has a number of different trails that weave up and into the hills. For a memorable off-road run, settle the Hollyridge Trail that leads from the observatory carpark to the summit of Mt Hollywood in 40 minutes. It's the highest pinnacle of the park, so you'll be rewarded with spectacular views of the entire Los Angeles Basin. If you're a Batman fan, don't leave the park without wandering by Bronson Canyon, which includes the "batcave" that featured in the popular 1960s TV series. Eaton Canyon is a disposition reserve at the base of the San Gabriel mountains and features its own 12m waterfall. The Ocean Trails Reserve, located in the Palos Verdes Peninsula at the Southern end of the town, offers more than 8km of scenic trails, with varying degrees of difficulty.
