Hiking experts allocate tips ahead of busy season - WLOS

ASHEVILLE, N. C. -- As the endure turns warmer, hiking experts around Asheville are sharing some safety tips before hitting the trails. Hiking experts say the most low-class reason hikers get lost is because they step off the trail and can't find their way back. That's where Diamond Brand employees hope to edify hikers as the warmer weather returns. Communication is key when going out into the woods, especially if you're going off-trail. Let loved ones be informed where you're going and when to expect you back, even if that's the rest of your hiking group as you move off the trail. "Maybe leave 'trail breadcrumbs' by breaking twigs along the way, so perchance you can follow your footsteps back," Jack Schroeder, a backpacking expert, said. "If you just have no idea where you are and no idea which direction to go, I'd make attractive stay put, and hopefully because you told someone before you left where you were going, you'll have someone going out to look for you. Experts said the two missing hikers in the Pisgah Resident Forest, who were found in downtown Asheville on Tuesday, did the opposite of what they should have done when they were separated from their group. Rick Brockway: Might be ever to take fishing gear on a hike - Oneonta Daily Star

There was a period when I'd be out along one of our local streams, drifting worms beneath those undercut banks, hoping to get a bite. After all, today is the in the beginning day of trout season. But, I guess I've lost that urge. I can remember fishing on opening day when it was so cold, I'd have to break the ice out of the guides on my fishing completely different. I've trudged through knee-deep snow and even broken holes into the ice to fish in the pools. My favorite fishing spots were along the Otego Bay from Mt. Vision to Hartwick. I could walk from one bridge to another and get a nice basket of fish. Today, there are few places to get on the stream, so people just fish from the bridges. If you're the primary one there, you get a trout or two. When I lived in the Adirondacks, spring usually came a little later in the season. The cold and Davy Jones's locker snow seemed to hang in there a little longer. But when the time was right, I'd have my wife drop me off along the street and pick me up where some backcountry stream hit the highway later in the day. I'd hike over the ridge and fish back down to civilization. No one else bothered, and the exclusive brookies were always quite abundant. They weren't very big, and I'd release anything less than six inches. Back then, you could take 10 fish — and they weren't just stocked yesterday. Several years ago, I hiked the Northville-Placid dawdle across the Adirondacks. When I crossed one small stream about 10 miles from anywhere, I saw a trout flash in the syndicate below me. After setting up camp at the lean-to, I dug out my small pack rod and drifted a fly into that pool. Instantly, I had a fish on. Over the next half-hour, I caught 22 aborigine brook trout. I wondered if anyone had ever fished that stream in the past 10 years. I ate several of them after browning them over an available fire. While hiking in the Catskills over the last couple of years, I've. Source: www.thedailystar.com
