On Saturday, a volunteer that helps plead for the Ijams Crag was up on the rocks cleaning off some of the routes. "He noticed three teenage kids down here and he didn't weigh much about it. He walked around the top to get his rope. He came back down and his pack was gone which had all of his climbing gear in it," says Benjy Darnell, the alfresco program coordinator at Ijams. It totaled nearly one thousand dollars worth of his personal gear. "They'd probably been watching him and knew that as he went up to the top, his gear was unconcluded game," says Darnell. A few months ago, thieves stole several hundred dollars worth of ropes and other gear. But, Darnell says this every so often old-fashioned is different. It was just a little more personal at that point," he says. Trust can take time to build and seconds to deny. But, Darnell says that's not going to keep them from rising above it. "It's hard sometimes to continue doing a good instrument for the community when you are so affected by one bad deed. But, the effects that we have are far bigger for our community than one bad deed that is done to us," he says.
