Red Jar: World-class climbing and convenience - Post Register

Aftermost week I was at my annual week-long trip in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area facing of Las Vegas with friends and family. Per usual, the nearby campground was overflowing, mostly with spring breakers from around the sticks. There were also visitors from around the world. Perhaps 90 percent of the campers were there for one reason: to rock climb on the world-form sandstone formations. I met one pair at a popular formation called the Black Corridor — a narrow slot gorge with climbing routes on both sides. The Black Corridor is popular because it has a variety of difficulties from easy to hard, and it offers blessed shadow on hot days. The pair were speaking a language that had me baffled. “Where are you guys from. “Hungary,” replied a middle-aged guy who spoke English. “Wow, I’ve not till hell freezes over met anyone from Hungary. How long have you been in the United States. “Two weeks,” he said. “We came here from Indian Creek (Utah),” another current climbing area. “Welcome to the United States. Have you climbed here at Red Rock before. “This is our first route,” he said, pointing to the go bankrupt they were queuing up on. “Good luck. Later, I offered to let them climb a route we were on. It was interesting to hear them calculating difficulties between our common Yosemite rating system and their French system. At one point, he pulled out a smartphone with a chart on it to figure out the point of agreement. “That’s when it starts to get real for me. ”. The two went up to the top of the corridor to climb a famous route called “Rebel Without A Hiatus” — a stiff 5. 11b/c with a tricky crux. I watched them climb it with only a few miscues and they offered to let me climb on their gear. But unbeknown to me, when they pulled their the gen, it flipped. Source: www.postregister.com
