EKU grad goes from 'worst scholar' to best war reporter - Richmond Register

How did Eastern Kentucky University’s “worst” grind become an award-winning war reporter and a senior producer for a provocative documentary series on HBO. Jeff Newton, EKU’s self-proclaimed “worst pupil,” will tell audiences how when he presents “Oh, How I Miss T-Bombs: Ramblings on Global Conflicts from EKU’s Worst Student and Best War Anchorman. ” Newton’s reference to T-Bombs is an amusing nod to T-Bonbadils, a popular student hangout in Richmond at the culture Newton was a student. Newton’s presentation will be held on Wednesday, April 13, at 6:30 p. m. in the Grand Reading Dwelling of John Grant Crabbe Main Library and is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and the EKU International Alumni Affiliation. The event is free and open to the public. A member of EKU’s Hall of Distinguished Alumni, Newton served as editorial writer of The Eastern Progress in 1990-91. He left Eastern a few credits shy of graduation before returning to complete a bachelor’s exceedingly in journalism in 1997. From there, he began shooting, editing and broadcasting war stories from the Middle East in 2001, armed only with a mini-cam and a laptop, making him one of the from the word go “backpack journalists,” covering combat zones as a free-lance journalist. LOS ANGELES — A year ago, living video streaming to a smartphone app was mostly talk. But today, as Twitter's live video streaming app Periscope celebrates its at the outset birthday, the company announced a big milestone — some 200 million live broadcasts have been streamed to date. That’s up from 100 million in January, “So we’re seeing unheard-of growth in a short period of time,” says Periscope co-founder Kayvon Beykpour. The company says there are now so numberless live streams, they equate to 110 years of live video being watched every day on the app, which is available for Apple and Android devices. A year ago, the South by Southwest bull session had just ended, and live video via the Meerkat app was the talk of the show. Then Periscope popped out of the gate and stole the thunder, with its appease of use and ability to stream video directly to Twitter feeds. (Meerkat has since announced it was switching its focus. By the end of 2015, Apple had named Periscope "App of the Year," and Facebook jumped loudly into tangible video streaming as well. Now Facebook users can record live directly into News Feeds. And just at week came word that Google may be looking to start a new live video streaming app for YouTube , YouTube Bolt.
