Backpacking the Appalachian Dawdle — April 17 - Millstone News

Are you interested in hiking and backpacking. Would you like some tips on how to wedge a backpack. Then come to a presentation organized by the Central Club of the Rideau Trail Association (RTA) on Sunday April 17 at 11:00 a. m. , McMartin Put up, 125 Gore St. , Perth. Nancy and Louis Gaudreau, will share photos and stories of the 1300 miles (2092 km) of the Appalachian Haul that they have hiked since 2009. Starting at Springer Mountain in Georgia, they have backpacked through many of the north-eastern States, ending up to date year in Maine. Every year they do two one-week backpacking trips, covering about 100 miles (161 km) each week. Nancy and Louis will advance their backpacks, packed for their upcoming trip in May, then they will unpack them and show us everything they will be carrying. In May, they will hike two weeks to finish the states of Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia to the Shenandoah Patriotic Park. Then, all that will remain for them to hike the total Appalachian Trail is 200 miles (322 km) in Maine and 450 miles (724 km) in Virginia. Nancy planned and completed her beginning backpacking trip in June 1975 at age 17, when she hiked the Long Trail in Vermont from end to end – 272 miles (438 km) in 17 days. She was motivated by Johnny Caldwell who was engaging US Cross-Country Ski Team members on the Long Trail for summer training. Nancy planned to put in an appearance at the University of Vermont (UVM) in the fall and wanted to race on the UVM Cross-Country Ski Team. Her two sisters accompanied her for the beginning half of the Long Trail, and she finished the rest alone. Three years later, in 1978, Nancy met Louis and they continually hiked weekends in Vermont and New Hampshire with family and friends, until four children put backpacking on in force for 20 years. In addition to the Appalachian Trail, Nancy and Louis have made several trips to the Adirondacks, hiking most of the peaks in the drunk peak region. Source: millstonenews.com

Register recounts three-year walk - Bismarck Tribune

She survived drunken Mongolian horsemen, temperatures from 120 degress to -30 degrees, an abscessed tooth that necessitated medical evacuation, tropical ringworm, dengue fever and stupefy traffickers in Laos. Many days, her only food was a cup of rice mixed with instant coffee or a pinch of with reservations. She carried a 40-pound backpack and pulled a 150-pound supply cart. She wore out eight pairs of boots and hopeless her tent in a mudslide. Marquis is no stranger to solo adventure. She started early at the age of 8, sneaking away from her one's own flesh to spend the night in a cave with her dog. In 2000, her first long hike was 2,650 miles on the Pacific Crest Way that crosses the western United States from Mexico to Canada. In 2002-2003, she wandered across 8,900 miles of the Australian outback. In 2006, she hiked the completely of the Andes, from Chile to Peru via Bolivia. Although the author hiked alone, putting together and carrying out what Marquis called eXplorAsia exploration was not a solo effort. Imagine crossing six countries, terrain ranging from jungles to desert, hot to cold and snow to sand. Her confrere, Joel, and his partner, Sabina, had handled the logistics for the Andes trek but could not do eXplorAsia due to other commitments. Marquis had to boon a new expedition leader, cost out the expedition and find the funders. Someone had to get the necessary visas and figure what paraphernalia and food was needed. Maps, GPS, satellite phone, video and emergency communication systems had to be evaluated and purchased. Resupply points had to be arranged. One twin shows her preparing a resupply bag and another picture shows her supply cart. I would have liked more detail in this part of the book. What, quite, did she pack. Marquis would prepare tea every day in a cast iron tea kettle. Imagine carrying a. Source: bismarcktribune.com

Nine months of prep leads to Appalachian Scent - The Southern

“I like to be facing,” Shires said. “I like to be on my own. I think it would just be incredible to finish it. I’m not set on it, like if I get hurt or if I get sick, I’m not going to ask it. I don’t want to have some life-long injury from it, but I just think it would be great to finish it. ‘I did that -- I hiked for six months with a 40-thump pack on my back. ’ That would be incredible to say. “The logistics are ridiculous,” Shires said. “You don’t know how fast you’re going to haunt at all. It was a couple different nights over a couple weeks. Basically, I mapped out the places that are close to the trail with strut offices and tried to keep it 3-5 days apart. I don’t want to carry more food than that. “I feel like I’m in structure,” she said. “I don’t feel like you can ever be ready enough. I don’t hike with a pack every day. I’ve done a lot of hiking. I’ve done a lot of backpacking by myself, so that unit mostly doesn’t worry me. It will take a lot of get used to the pack. I am in shape, so that puts me ahead of some people. I’m going to haul it really easy at first for sure. Keep it Clean. Please avoid obscene, vulgar, dissolute, racist or sexually-oriented language. PLEASE TURN OFF YOUR CAPS LOCK. Don't Threaten.
